Britney Spears Celebrated Her Freedom With This Bubbly Beverage

Even though she's almost 40 years old, Britney Spears feels like an adult for the first time in over a decade. She expressed the glee of someone who was just turning 21 in a recent Instagram post. "I actually got my first glass of champagne at the most beautiful restaurant I've ever seen last night," Spears wrote. "I'm celebrating my freedom and my B-day for the next two months."

The unusual circumstances that led the 39-year-old pop star to party like it's 1999 (the year she turned 18, by the way) have been widely publicized. A judge agreed to end the conservatorship Spears has lived under since 2008 (via Vox). Under this arrangement, Spears' father Jamie Spears and his team were responsible for Britney Spears' finances and personal life. They monitored her spending, even down to her Starbucks orders. Her weekly allowance was so small, especially compared to the money she was making from lucrative TV appearances, she couldn't even afford to pay her half of a restaurant bill on one occasion in 2012, according to The New Yorker.

Years spent in conservatorship robbed Britney Spears of her sense of joy

Given all the restrictions placed on her life during nearly 14 years under her father's conservatorship, Britney Spears must have really enjoyed that glass of champagne. To say the bubbly must have tasted like freedom would be corny, for one thing, but it may also be an understatement. That sip of champagne she described on Instagram may have felt to Spears like she was coming back to life. The New Yorker reported that a makeup artist from Spears' conservatorship days described her as robotic during a shoot for a fragrance commercial, and one of her friends claimed the conservatorship had "made her a zombie."

This would definitely explain all the excitement about one night out for a fancy dinner. "I mean after 13 years ... I think I've waited long ENOUGH !!!!" Spears wrote in the Instagram caption. Her fans reflected the joy Spears was exuding in the post. "We love you B!!!" one fan commented. "Eat all the cake girl. Drink all the champagne."

Spears also showed appreciation for her fans in the post. "What a sight, seeing so many people celebrating my victory," she wrote. "I love my fans so much ... so thank you."
