Boomers' Favorite Casual Chain In 2026 Isn't Texas Roadhouse Or Cracker Barrel

Age-based stereotypes must be taken with a grain of salt, but evaluating the preferences of different groups can still be illuminating. When YouGov published its U.S. restaurant brand rankings data for 2026, it revealed an interesting development among older diners. According to a poll conducted by the marketing and analytics group, Boomers overwhelmingly chose Olive Garden as the casual dining establishment they're most likely to patronize next. Texas Roadhouse and Applebee's respectively landed in second and third place among older diners. 

Note that the accepted age range for Boomers is 62 to 80 (as of 2026, those born between 1946 and 1964). Although the YouGov poll spread the Boomers out over two age demographics (45 to 64 and 65+), Olive Garden was also the preferred casual dining establishment for both. Prospective diners ages 30 through 44 also ranked Olive Garden first, while Gen Z respondents (people aged 18 to 29 in the YouGov poll) named Chili's as their most considered restaurant chain. The results show that consumers of various ages have some dining habits in common, like the fact that QR menus are among the more frustrating restaurant trends.

Fortunately, Olive Garden has been able to maintain its industry foothold despite the tough economic landscape. However, the Italian-style chain hasn't experienced the same growth as fellow Darden brand LongHorn Steakhouse. In 2025, sales figures in the casual restaurant category showed that former top dog  Olive Garden was dethroned by Texas Roadhouse, due to the latter's consistent year-over-year performance. Despite its fluctuating fortunes, Olive Garden's appeal among older adults (as well as other age groups) could precede a turnaround. 

So, what is it about Olive Garden that's so attractive to older people? While Boomers are the most financially stable among adult age groups, high levels of debt leave them in a precarious position post-retirement. When it comes to dining out, Olive Garden's large portions mean a single meal can be stretched further with a to-go box. The restaurant also introduced a Lighter Portions menu with less food and a smaller price tag, which is equally appealing to guests on a budget.
