One Of The Cheapest Wines Sommeliers Recommend Comes From Kirkland Signature
Picture this: You had a long day, and all you want to do is relax, enjoy a delicious meal, and sip on a nice glass of wine. But you don't want to spend a small fortune in order to do so. Luckily, we consulted a few sommeliers for cheap wine recommendations, and one on their list is a popular Costco bottle for under $8. If you don't already know, a sommelier is a trained wine expert who educates the average wine fan on which bottles pair best with certain foods, as well as which ones they should purchase based on their taste and, most importantly, budget. So, what's the cheap wine that comes highly recommended by professionals? None other than Kirkland Signature's Côtes du Rhône Villages.
Straight from the bottle of the 2024 vintage are the words of winemaker Romain Leroy: "The Kirkland Signature Cotes du Rhône Villages is a classic blend of Rhône varietals with vibrant notes of black and red fruits, sweet tobacco and wild herbs. The rich aromatics are framed by textured tannins and a spice accented finish" (via Reverse Wine Snob). In simpler terms, expect a fruit-forward red with some herbal, earthy, and spicy notes rather than a super-sweet wine. This blend includes Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre varieties, known as the GSM blend from France's Rhône River valleys.
Here's what wine drinkers think of Kirkland Signature Côtes du Rhône Villages
The 2023 and 2024 vintages of Kirkland Signature's Côtes du Rhône Villages both received an overall rating of 8.3 out of 10 from Reverse Wine Snob. The 2025 vintage is rolling out as of this writing and may already be available at a Costco near you (and if not, it may be soon). Reviews are limited because it's so new, but on Reddit, a few buyers have shared their opinions. As one shopper reported, "Loved it. I'm back today at Costco and bought a case." Another customer wrote in the same thread, "Very good but not as good as last year's excellent vintage. It has a slight tar-like taste in the finish that is distracting. It's still an easy case purchase for me."
To get the most out of this wine's aroma and flavors, serve it after decanting for about 30 minutes, ideally at a temperature between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. In terms of food, consider pairing your glass with beef, venison, or a juicy lamb burger. This bottle also pairs well with vegetable stew, oven-roasted ratatouille pasta, or a variety of cheeses, from aged cheddar to Gouda.
It's hard to go wrong for around $90 a case, especially if you want to stock up on this vintage. While you're at the warehouse retailer, why not also check out the seven best and seven worst Kirkland wines to buy at Costco?
