It's no secret that McDonald's menus are different in other countries. Perusing the chain's international offerings often inspires cravings that can't be satisfied without hopping on a flight, but luckily, some of the Golden Arches global menu staples can be easily recreated stateside. Case in point: You can order your next McDonald's chicken sandwich German-style.

In Germany, the Golden Arches offers the Double (aka Doppel) Chickenburger, a hearty chicken sandwich with main character energy. As the name suggests, the substantial sandwich comes with not one but two crispy breaded chicken patties, plus iceberg lettuce and sweet chili sauce, served on a classic burger bun. While the Double Chickenburger is not an official menu item at the chain's United States locations, American customers who want a filling McDonald's chicken sammy can easily approximate the German-style item with a few simple tweaks.

Order a classic McChicken with no mayonnaise and an extra chicken patty, and you're most of the way there. The sweet chili sauce is where things get sticky, as you won't find this McDonald's condiment in the United States. You could try replacing it with a store-bought sweet chili sauce such as Mae Ploy. Or you could whip up a makeshift version by mixing McDonald's sweet and sour sauce with hot sauce and ketchup or creating a similar combination of sweet, spicy, and tangy condiments. Alternatively, simply replace it with your favorite McDonald's dipping sauce.

How does the German double chickenburger compare to the American version?

While diners can't currently recreate the exact Double Chickenburger experience stateside, there's a case to be made that the American secret menu version is even better than its German counterpart. For one thing, the German Chickenburger patty is not as substantial as the American McChicken patty. The Double Chickenburger boasts 17 grams of protein, while a McChicken with two patties packs around 23 grams of protein.

It's also worth noting that the Double Chickenburger has changed over time. As shown in a 2016 review on YouTube, the item used to come with honey mustard. One commenter lamented the condiment's removal. Luckily for American customers, the honey mustard sauce is available stateside. So you can easily recreate this earlier version of the sandwich while getting a protein boost.
