The Burger Chain That Sells A High-Quality Fish Sandwich (It Isn't McDonald's)

McDonald's is recognized as one of America's earliest burger chains, and its Filet-O-Fish is one of the most famous seafood menu items in the fast food game. Whataburger, the Texas-born chain that has been slinging beef since 1950, is clearly known for burgers as well, but like McDonald's, it also deals in other proteins. According to customers, the chain restaurant serves one of the highest-quality fish sandwiches, cleverly named the Whatacatch.

Whataburger's fish sandwich is constructed a little differently than McDonald's Filet-O-Fish and other competitors' seafood handhelds. It starts with a panko-crusted, fried filet of wild-caught Alaskan pollock, which is placed on a bun and crowned with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce. Diners can customize the sammy with American cheese, jalapeños, and other condiments. The fish is also available as a platter with fries and tartar sauce.

The Whatacatch is high-quality because it's a good-sized portion of sustainable, nutritious fish. The filet is generous and extends beyond the bun, with a ratio customers say is notably more fish than breading. The tomato and lettuce are also sliced on site daily, rather than shipped to stores pre-cut. Unfortunately for fans, Whataburger's fish sandwich is a limited-time favorite that the chain revives annually from winter through Easter. It's a common practice for Catholics to abstain from meat and poultry on Fridays during Lent, hence the tradition of burger joints serving seafood for the season.

The Whatacatch fish sandwich has a loyal fanbase

Whataburger has served the Whatacatch for decades, sometimes as a permanent menu item and other years as a seasonal release in time for Lent. In 2026, the Whatacatch fish sandwich cost $5.49 on its own, $9.49 as a combo, and $11.99 as a platter (prices vary by location). The sandwich contains 490 calories, 20 grams of fat, 59 grams of carbs, 5 grams of fiber, 7 grams of sugar, and 19 grams of protein. Despite fish sandwiches not being the most popular fast food menu items, the Whatacatch has a loyal following (the chain does too; even Chef Aaron Sanchez thinks Whataburger is the best fast food).

"Heaven on a bun. Giant tasty piece of battered fish, light sauce, some lettuce, and a tomato slice. It's perfection on a bun," one Reddit user writes of the Whatacatch. "I had the fish sandwich the other day, and I agree that it was delicious ... I don't usually like fish. I added sliced jalapeño and extra tartar sauce," says a Facebook user. "The Whatacatch is the best fish sandwich out there," adds another Redditor.

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish, arguably the most famous fast food fish sandwich, also uses wild-caught Alaskan pollock, but instead of fresh veggies like the Whatacatch, it's topped with American cheese and tartar sauce on a steamed bun. Instead of panko, it's encrusted with wheat and corn flour breading. The chains' tartar sauces also reportedly differ. McDonald's version leans sweet, while Whataburger's is more tart and acidic.
