Costco Shoppers Are Divided On This Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon Spread
"Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried minced garlic and onion, and sea salt. These five ingredients aren't necessarily the heroes of the spice world, but in the bagel reality ... they are everything," Taste wrote in 2019, a time that was not even close to the beginning of the everything bagel-flavor zeitgeist. "Mixed together, [these seeds and spices] revolutionized the bagel world sometime in the early 1980s. Or maybe it was the early 1970s." All we know for sure is that enough people are obsessed with the flavor combination that is "everything bagel" that you can now find the combination on spice shelves everywhere, including Trader Joe's, Costco, and Aldi. Martha Stewart recently published a "how-to" with regard to making your own at home (via Martha Stewart), and for low-carb dieters, there's even this everything bagel chicken recipe to satisfy the inevitable craving.
So you would think that, when Costco trotted out Goldberg's Smoked Salmon Dip and Spread featuring Everything Bagel seasoning, everything bagel seasoning fans would be ecstatically doing a happy dance. And some certainly are. But based on the reactions to this Instagram post by @CostcoDeals on April 23, not everyone is thrilled. In fact, it appears that Costco shoppers are quite divided on how to react to this gift from the everything bagel gods.
Costco's Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon spread — a miracle or a miss?
Given the overall cultural love for the salty, umami, vaguely spicy, perfectly crunchy everything bagel seasoning, it might be hard to imagine that anything billed as "everything bagel-flavored" would not universally thrill hungry fans. And when you consider the ubiquity of lox on bagels, adding a schmear of cream cheese dotted with a generous portion of smoked salmon would only heighten the enthusiasm. And that's probably what Costco was thinking when they started stocking Goldberg's Smoked Salmon Dip and Spread featuring Everything Bagel seasoning, which Instagram user @CostcoDeals shared on April 23. "This @goldbergsbagel #smokedsalmon dip and spread with #everythingbagel seasoning is soo good!!" they wrote, adding, "Only $9.99! Highly recommend!"
Of course, many agreed. As Instagram user @blondieakaflygirl said via emoji, "This stuff is the bomb." Not everyone was in agreement, however. Instagram user @Deejaymoo had only this to say: "Ew." And yes, they actually tried it, they confirmed when asked; in fact, they have a spare tub sitting in their fridge if anyone wants it. "It just tasted like Capers to me I was so sad haha," wrote @MrsCulbertson053015, which is, of course, a fair criticism. However, it's worth noting that many people actually love capers on their bagels and lox, and presumably their everything bagels and lox, too.
