The Burrata Pizza Trend That TikTok Is Loving

TikTok has influenced what and how we eat. How else can we explain people dipping chicken nuggets into Frosties? The app is responsible for cloud bread, competitive charcuterie boards, and the tiny food trend, making internet influencers overnight and driving restaurant and grocery sales up (per CNBC).

According to the Food Institute, people are looking for a connection and inspiration — whether it's a new restaurant to try, a unique snack, or the Millenial favorite, Trader Joe's reviews. Food videos on TikTok deliver. A national survey conducted by MGH found 38% of TikTok users "have visited or ordered food from a restaurant after seeing a TikTok video about the restaurant." With an active user base of 136 million in the U.S. and 1 billion globally, approximately 51.8 million U.S. consumers are looking for the next interesting meal.

While TikTok videos can deliver a lot of drama, like the Pasta Queen's telenovela cooking shows, 72% of users say they were influenced simply because the food looked good. The hashtag #foodtiktok has had 116 billion hits, and, unbelievably, videos of users eating the food trends, #foodtrends, have garnered over 7 million views. Pizza is always popular in the U.S., and the availability of portable pizza ovens has triggered new trends (remember hot honey?). While pepperoni is the most popular topping, classic cheese is always a good idea, and more cheese is even better. Burrata pizza is the latest trend, and it's for cheese lovers.

Burrata pies are finding new fans

According to USA Today, pizza is still Americans' favorite food. Whether part of your regular diet or considered a splurge, we love pizza in all its glorious forms. Favorite pizza toppings vary depending on your zip code, with 12 states preferring pepperoni and, not surprisingly, only two states opting for anchovies, per How To Cook. Burrata pizzas are gaining traction on TikTok. Margarita, arugula, and prosciutto pizzas are topped with whole balls of burrata cheese waiting to be sliced open and smeared on each slice.

Burrata is a fresh cow's milk cheese that has a shell of mozzarella cheese that, when broken into, reveals a creamy inside of cheese curds and cream. The southern Italian delicacy is reminiscent of fresh mozzarella and scratch-made ricotta, yet better and more decadent than both, with a rich, buttery taste, via AllRecipes.

While your local pizzeria may create it for you if you ask nicely, portable pizza ovens have made homemade pizza a fun and simple weeknight meal. Sales of portable pizza ovens, like the popular Ooni, soared to $301 million in 2021 and are projected to reach $402 million by 2027, a 4.94% growth. With lower prices and professional pizza oven features like wood burning and temperatures that reach up to 950 degrees, pizzas can be churned out in 60 seconds, per Globe News Wire. If cooking at home isn't your thing, there are always individual slices sold with an entire ball of burrata at Eataly.
