Cranston, Jr. in Southern California in 1916, Thermador is a long-established leader of the luxury kitchen market in the United States, pioneering products like the first built-in wall oven and the first all-stainless steel dishwasher (it's also famous for its signature star-shaped stove burners). The upscale brand was quietly purchased by BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH (BSH) in 1998, and has been owned solely by Bosch under the company's North American branch, BSH Home Appliances Corporation, since 2015.

Much like Bosch, Thermador is known for reliability and long-lasting quality. With many single appliances in the five-figure range and kitchen suites north of $40,000, the brand caters to a niche market (although mixed customer satisfaction landed it on our list of the most overpriced appliance brands). However, if you want a combination of cutting-edge technology, dependable German engineering, a luxury look and feel, and you're willing to splurge, Thermador is a viable option.

If the name Gaggenau doesn't ring a bell, don't worry — the brand falls on the high end of the luxury appliance market, so if you don't spend a lot of time in multimillion-dollar homes, you're unlikely to come across its products very often. The company's upscale roots date back to 1683, when an aristocrat founded a nail forge turned ironworking factory in the German town of Gaggenau (making it one of the world's oldest appliance brands). In the 1800s, Gaggenau began specializing in oven enamel, and by the 20th century, it was firmly established as a leader of the German kitchen appliance industry. Gaggenau expanded to the U.S. market in the 1980s, and was purchased by Bosch in the mid-1990s. 

These days, it's renowned for its sleek, professional-grade design and state-of-the-art culinary technology that spares no expense. Its built-in stoves and oven units are favorites of many celebrity chefs (Andrew Zimmern's home kitchen is equipped with Gaggenau appliances, as is Éric Ripert's). The Bosch-owned brand's high-tech kitchen products are manufactured in facilities in Germany, France, Spain, and Turkey.

If you thought that Siemens was a technology company, you're not wrong. In the United States, you probably won't shop for Siemens-branded products unless you're investing in industrial technology.
