Fast Food Items That Have Received Makeovers In 2026 (For Better Or Worse)

While resisting business stagnation is smart, beloved restaurants should tread carefully when making product changes. As illustrated by Cracker Barrel's 2025 branding misadventure, chain restaurant makeovers that don't sit right with customers can lead to massive controversy and extended fallout. On the other hand, well-executed menu tweaks and ingredient upgrades can reengage patrons and attract new business. To get an idea of how our favorite fast food chains are faring, we reviewed 2026's biggest menu item makeovers.

The selection includes improved classics from Burger King and Wendy's, with both upgrades based on customer feedback. There are also some recipe improvements, new ingredients, and beverage tweaks from the likes of Arby's, Popeyes, Starbucks, and others. Staying fresh is crucial in the fast-paced world of quick-serve chains, where competition is fierce. However, not all of these updates were met with fan approval. For every successful menu innovation (like when McDonald's switched to fresh beef for its Quarter Pounders in 2018), there are plenty of others that rile up consumers. We'll single out fan reactions for each item to help you decide whether they're worth your bucks (and taste buds).

Burger King Whopper

One of several big changes at chain restaurants in 2026 was Burger King announcing its new and improved Whopper earlier this year. The Whopper still consists of flame-grilled beef, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and condiments. However, the revamped version features an enhanced bun and more flavorful mayonnaise, as well as cardboard packaging to keep the ingredients in place. On Reddit, a poster compared the new Whopper with McDonald's Big Arch burger and found the Burger King item superior. "The Whopper just tasted better overall. Fresh veggies, nice charbroiled flavor, and it felt more balanced."

Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich

Like Burger King, Wendy's carried out a major overhaul of a classic item in 2026. The chain's Spicy Chicken Sandwich has an upgraded bun, breading, and marinade. The restaurant also introduced a homestyle mayo that has the rich tanginess of Southern mayonnaise. While these tweaks sound appealing, Wendy's efforts received some criticism online. In a Reddit post, a former Spicy Chicken fan said they gave the new recipe a try after a 10-year hiatus, but spit out the "'woody' chicken," writing, "The abomination I attempted to consume was a disgrace and an insult to customers everywhere." On a separate Reddit thread, one commenter described the sandwich as "Nasty and dry as cardboard."

Taco Bell Volcano Menu

When Taco Bell brought back its Volcano menu in 2023, it reintroduced Lava Sauce, which was essentially a mashup of hot sauce and nacho cheese. A new version dubbed Volcano Sauce arrived in early 2026 and was touted as having a bolder, spicier flavor profile than the original. Volcano Sauce was paired with Crunchwraps, Quesaritos, and other menu items as a limited-time offering, but sadly, it did not hit the spot for Taco Bell customers. "It's gross. no spice, odd flavor, really just tastes like a gross mayo," said a disappointed Redditor. In another r/tacobell thread, a commenter stated, "It's got a decent heat level ... but you need to add diablo to get it as hot as I remember Lava Sauce being."

Arby's steak nuggets

Investing time and energy into an unsuccessful project and continuing because of the initial investment is known as the sunk cost fallacy. Based on the not-great response to Arby's debut of steak nuggets in 2025, we can't help but wonder if the chain is falling victim to this cognitive trap. Arby's is bringing back the controversial item later this August, and customers are already ornery. "The steak nuggets were so widely panned last year [for] being like beaver knuckles ... Arby's is going all in with them now?" pondered one Reddit user. For what it's worth, the new nuggets are made with higher-quality meat and can be accompanied by the new Horsey Ranch sauce.

Starbucks chai latte

Starbucks is big on drink customization, and the coffee chain even tweaked the recipe of its popular chai latte to make it more amenable to personalization. Chai's makeover allows patrons to adjust the sweetness and spice, but the reception has been pretty mixed. A self-proclaimed "big chai fan" and Starbucks staff member posted on Reddit about the new version, saying, "The one that I tried today tasted spicier and better than the original." However, another Reddit commenter dismissed the beverage as "Super milky, barely any spice or even a hit of flavor, not even sweet."

Popeyes shrimp

Popeyes may not be as famous for seafood options like butterfly shrimp as it is for its chicken, but in February 2026, the restaurant expanded its shrimp flavors to include Buffalo, garlic parm, lemon pepper, and ghost pepper dry rubs. There isn't much online commentary about Popeyes' butterfly shrimp dry rubs specifically, but its dry rub wings have mixed reviews. On r/Popeyes, one customer lamented, "Do you like feeling like your wings were dropped in sand?" Another commenter agreed, but added, "The only dry rub that tastes any good is the ghost pepper."

McDonald's Sprite Berry Blast and Dirty Dr Pepper

Some fast food makeovers happen for the purpose of limiting problematic ingredients from the menu. In the midst of McDonald's ongoing 2026 beverage launches (with the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer being the most recent arrival), the chain now offers reduced sugar versions of its Sprite Berry Blast and Dirty Dr Pepper beverages. Each drink can now be made with a diet soda as the base. Sprite Zero combines with blue raspberry syrup and cold foam to become a lower sugar Sprite Berry Blast, while Diet Dr Pepper with vanilla syrup and cold foam evolves into a lighter Dirty Dr Pepper. On r/McDonalds, a Golden Arches customer said, "Dirty Dr. Pepper is an absolutely stupid guilty pleasure of mine ... I wish they offered a zero sugar option so I can just pack on more vanilla syrup and cold foam." Looks like their wish has been granted!

Taco Bell Tajín Cheesy Gordita Crunch

The O.G. Cheesy Gordita Crunch received praise in our ranking of the Taco Bell tacos from worst to first. The cheesy, indulgent menu item was recently reinvented within the chain's new Tajín lineup, spotlighting the zesty lime and chile seasoning blend. The upgraded Tajín Cheesy Gordita Crunch comes with a Tajín-encrusted hard taco shell (merged to a flatbread by a melty cheese blend), seasoned beef, lettuce, shredded cheese, mango salsa, and spicy ranch. Reddit commentary was mixed, with one user having great things to say about the item. "I found [the Tajín Cheesy Gordita Crunch] beyond incredible. Packed with flavor, almost overwhelming with the Tajín seasoning."
