Expertise
Vegetarian cooking, Grocery saving hacks, International grocers
- Zachary's passion for grocery stores and international foods has taken him to every supermarket in New York City, from the Uzbek markets of Brighton Beach to the nation's only Bhutanese grocery store in Woodside.
- He's a lover of pizza and has tried over a dozen regional varieties—yes, even Rhode Island pizza strips (no cheese with a coating of red sauce on top).
- Although Zachary isn't a vegetarian, he's gotten really good at cooking without meat for many of his closest friends and family. He particularly loves using halloumi as a salty, savory, and filling main dish.
Experience
Zachary is a lover of all things food and has been a food writer since 2016, when he started the grocery industry blog The Market Report. Examining the grocery business and its relationship with communities, his writing for The Market Report bridges food, culture, business, and geography. As a reporter for the Mott Haven Herald and Hunts Point Express, he covered hyperlocal news centered on food and retail and explored the importance of good food to a healthy, functional neighborhood. As a research fellow for Bon Appétit and Epicurious, he fact-checked articles, videos, and recipes for both print and digital platforms. He also contributed original writing, including a feature on "The Bear" and entries for the weekly "What We're Cooking" column. In all of his writing, Zachary seeks to make the food industry interesting, accessible, and relevant.
Education
Zachary has a bachelor's degree in media, culture, and the arts and a master's in management from Clark University and a master's in journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
